Johnny Burks

Johnny Burks, 83, of Dyersburg, died Friday, December 22, 2023, at AHC Dyersburg. Born July 16, 1940, he is the son of the late Addie Jane and Norman Burks. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL. He graduated from Dyersburg High School, Class of 1959, where he played basketball and football and served as a captain of the football team. Johnny attended Mississippi State University where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Johnny worked previously at Manners Men Store and Dr. Pepper- Pepsi Bottling Company. He engaged in cattle farming and became a land developer and contractor.  Johnny was an avid golfer no matter the weather.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2023, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church officiated by Reverend Joe Porter.

The family will receive friends Friday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time in the Wheeler Room at the church.                        

He is survived by one daughter, Lisa Escue (Billy) of Dyersburg; one son, Taylor Burks (Emily) of Nashville; two grandsons, Stephen Escue (Hailey Clendenin) and Cody Escue (Taylor); sister, Norma Jane Skoglund and husband Roy of Eugene, Oregon; and two brothers, Norman “Bucky” Burks and wife Patricia, of Dyersburg, and Bill Burks and wife Elva of Clarksville, TN.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Judy Hall Burks.

The family requests memorials be directed to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 108 N. King, Dyersburg, TN  38024.
