Dr. Carol Feather, 81, of Dyersburg, died Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Born May 5, 1941 in Greensburg, PA, she is daughter of the late Curtis and Carrie May (Charles) Feather.
A lifelong advocate of education, Feather served as a professor at Dyersburg State Community College for 47 years until her retirement in August of 2016. A charter faculty member, Dr. Feather began her employment at DSCC in 1969 as an Instructor of Music. Over the years, she has held many titles, including: Director of Student Activities (1975-1981), Interim Director of Financial Aid Assistant and Associate Professor of Music (1981-1985), Interim Director of Continuing Education (1985), Assistant to the Dean (1985-1987), and Professor of Music and Speech (1985-2016).She has also played a pivotal role in strengthening the Dyer County community through her volunteer work with multiple agencies, including St. Jude, Adopt-A-School, Rotary International, and many more. In 1982, Feather first ran for a seat on the Dyer County Board of Education and served for 36 years.
Dr. Feather was a chairperson and member of the Dyer County Board of Education, founding member of the local chapter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, recipient of the Sterling Award for the Most Influential Women of West Tennessee, recipient of the Outstanding DSCC Faculty/ Staff Award in 1984, founding president of the Dyersburg/ Dyer County Humane Society in 1985, vice president for the Western Division of the Tennessee Humane Association in 1989, board member of the Dyersburg-Dyer County Arts Council, conductor and director of the Dyersburg Community Orchestra since its inception, member of the Board of Directors of the Dyersburg Area Community Concert Association, member of Rotary International, Board of Directors of the Adopt-a-School Program, member of the Board of Directors of the Dyersburg Stage Door Players, member of the first Leadership class of the Dyersburg/ Dyer County Chamber of Commerce, designated as a 'Point of Light' by President George Bush for her tireless work as a community volunteer, president of the Dyersburg/ Dyer County Arts Council for 33 years, and traveler to many exotic places, including Antarctica and a safari in Africa.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2022 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Dr. Cory D. Williams. Interment will be in St. Clair Cemetery in Greensburg, PA.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday until service time at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In addition to her parents, Dr. Feather is preceded in death by her sister, Lois Feather.
Dr. Feather is survived by a multitude of friends and former students.
