Annie M. Parker ‘Ann’ Alexander passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022, profoundly affecting Mother’s Day the following day and her family’s reverence for it always. Almost reaching her 98th birthday, Ann was born July 9, 1924 to Emmett Garfield Parker and Hattie Celestia Humphreys Parker on the Oldham-Parker farm, ‘Frog Jump’, in Crockett County, Tennessee.
She treasured her family and the childhood she was afforded on that sweet patch of land all of her life. Halls High School was her alma mater. Family loved to remind her of her reign there as Miss Halls High.
She married William Polk Alexander, Jr of Dyersburg, TN on June 5, 1946 following his having served in the US Navy during WWII and an initial blind date. Ann easily fell into the role of running a home for her husband who partnered in Alexander & Holmes, Certified Public Accountants, beginning his practice in Dyersburg in 1946. She was a loving and devoted mother until her last breath.
Ann was the oldest living member of First Presbyterian Church in Dyersburg at the time of her death having been a faithful member some 76 years. She served earlier in life as secretary to Women In the Church for many years as well. She loved her church and her church family all of her life. Ann was also a member of Key Corner Chapter of Daughters of The American Revolution. She particularly enjoyed orchestrating a most special program welcoming Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr., grandson of the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler, into her home and as speaker at a DAR community gathering October 28, 2013.
Left to miss her always, are her children, William Polk Alexander III (Shelley) of Brentwood, TN; Joseph Parker Alexander of Cordova, TN; and Amy Oldham Alexander Jacobs (Bill) of Brookhaven, MS. She regarded as her honorary third son Jørn Olsen, MD, Dyersburg Rotary-sponsored American Field Service 1963-1964 Dyersburg High exchange student of Aarhus, Denmark. Four grandchildren, William Polk Alexander IV (Laura) of Brentwood,TN, Victoria Alexander (Cory) Johnson of Estes Park, CO, Ann Kirkpatrick Jacobs (Neil) Harris of Memphis, TN, and Meredith Alexander Jacobs of Charleston,SC; Three great grandchildren: Mira Skye Alexander, William Polk Alexander V, Sage Alexander Johnson and one highly anticipated great granddaughter Harris due in August.
