States Viar passed away on Thursday, August,13th in California. Anyone old enough to remember him would have known him as "Tater" Viar. Born and raised in Lenox, he answered our country's call during World War II and joined the Army Air Corps. He flew as a ball turret gunner in B-24 Liberators, flying out of Africa and southern Italy. States and his crew survived bombing raids over such dangerous targets as the Ploesti, Romania, oil fields. States was married to the late Billie Joyce Dunn of Dyersburg. They were the parents of three daughters, Lynn, Patricia and Lisa as well as three sons, Richard, Craig and Jeffrey. States also leaves behind six grand-children, and four great grandchildren. States was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he lettered in baseball. Predeceasing States were sister Marjorie Viar Craft and brothers Walt, Sam and Bobby Joe. Survivors include his sister Sally Viar Thompson and brothers Paul and John. States' ashes will be interred at Fairview Cemetery in a private ceremony on October 9, 2015.
