Chester Bernard “Cotton” Carmer, 90, of Dyersburg, died Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Dyersburg Manor. Born September 7, 1926, he was the son of the late John and Mary Scheina Carmer. Mr. Carmer was a first generation American as his parents were immigrants from Poland in the early 1900s. Cotton’s parents moved to Dyersburg from Oswega, New York in 1929 in conjunction with the opening of the old Dyersburg Cotton Products. Mr. Carmer was a lifelong member of Holy Angels Catholic Church of Dyersburg, an avid gardener and a master craftsman in woodworking. He was known affectionately by all his friends as “Cotton”. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers College, Memphis, TN with a degree in engineering. “Cotton” was an Air Force veteran and a fifteen year employee of Dyersburg Fabrics.
Mr. Carmer was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Mary Carmer, his sister Constance Carmer Taylor, and his brother-in-law Dr. David Taylor. Dedication to his parents and sister was a deep passion of “Cotton”.
“Cotton” will be missed by his long-time friends, JoAnn and Jere Powell, the caregivers at Dyersburg Manor, and his devoted personal sitters.
Graveside funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Fairview Cemetery conducted by Deacon Bill Winston.
Friends are asked to gather at the cemetery at 10:00 am for a quiet time of remembrance before the service.
The family requests memorials be directed to Holy Angels Catholic Church, 535 Tucker Street, Dyersburg, TN 38024.
