Anne Kirk, 84, of Dyersburg, died Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Dyersburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation. Born June 2, 1932 in Fort Worth, TX, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Marie Clark. She was a retired principal in the Dyer County School System and member of First United Methodist Church. Kirk joined Dyer County Schools in 1972 as an elementary teacher. In 1976, she took the role of principal of RoEllen Elementary School. She was the first female principal hired in the school system in 1976. She then served as principal of Fifth Consolidated from 1979 to 1990, when she retired from the system. Anne was a well- respected principal and role model for other educators, parents and students. She helped establish the Adopt-A-School program. She avidly supported the Dyer County Union Mission, Children Services Child Abuse Team, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and The Hope House. Her hobbies included reading, traveling, and gardening.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 22, 2016 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home conducted by Reverend Ed White and Reverend Dell King with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Barry Cole, Preston Dickerson, Dwight Hedge, Ralph Henson, Jimmy Moody and Dent Yarbro. Honorary pallbearers will be Woody Clifton, Willie Cole, Tyles Davenport, Charlie Dunn, Randall Harris, John Hart, Bob Newbill, John Palmer, Johnny Mac Palmer, Brad Studdard and Chris Young.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 21st from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jere T. Kirk; two daughters, Jenny Kirk of Memphis, Melinda Kirk Mason (Dan) of Grapevine, TX; one son, Steve Kirk of Jackson; one sister, Carolyn Buck of Corpus Christie, TX; six grandchildren, Caleb Kirk (Kelly), Joshua Kirk, Andrea Kirk, Katie Ferley (Justin), Sarah Mason and Kirk Mason.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Jane “Debbie” Kirk.
