Janice Jordan

May 18, 1933 — March 23, 2018

Janice Jordan was called home while in Henry Ford Hospital on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 6:05 PM. She was born May 18, 1933,  the last of 8 children, born to Myrtle (Hopkins) & Joseph Jernigan, 3 girls; Opal, Ruby and Janice, 5 boys;  Charles, Earl, Benjamin, Kelly and Homer, all preceded her in death.  Janice was the only child in her family born in a hospital, in Memphis TN and raised in Ripley,TN.  She moved to Chicago IL, with her father at age of 13, where she completed school then met and married Filmore Casner. After 1 year of marriage, they moved to San Fernando Valley, California where Janice worked at Pacific Bell Telephone Company for many years.  She later divorced and moved to Detroit MI., where she met and married Charles (Lucky) Jordan, (who preceded her in death).  She later enrolled in a program for Nursing Assistance. After graduating, she acquired employment at Henry Ford Hospital, where she worked until retiring in 2002.  Janice, also found who would become her very best friend and sister in Christ, Thelma Nelson while in the training program.  Thelma, introduced her to “Oakland Avenue Missionary Baptist Church”, where she joined and was baptized in 2006, serving faithfully in the following ministries; the Mission, Mother’s Board, 50 Plus Ministry, Christian Education Academy, and Culinary Art´s Ministry.  Janice also had a great devotional love for her Pastor, Larry J Walker, who would always put a smile on her face. Janice, lived a full life and was a very happy person.  She loved to talk and she enjoyed meeting people.  She was also known for wearing hats and gloves, whenever she went outside, no matter how hot it was, she had on her hat and gloves.   Her hobbies were watching baseball, and she knew every team, every player and there stats.  She also loved playing scrabble, Dominos and bingo.  Bingo became her passion. If you called her around 5:30 on her bingo days, she would quickly tell you, “OK honey, it was nice talking to you but I’ve got to get ready for bingo”.    She enjoyed riding around the city, in her old neighborhood reminiscing of the days of past.  She was so amazed at the revitalization going on while listening to R&B, hunching her shoulders up-and-down saying, “you know I used to be a very good dancer”. Janice, was a very kind and giving person, if she had it and you needed it she would give it to you, and she would always say “I love you girl/boy”.  She knew what it was and how to be a FRIEND.  She was well loved by many. Graveside funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2018 at Poplar Grove Cemetery in Henning, officiated by Brother Mac Daniels.           Family members will serve as pallbearers.
