Ralph Benton “Snuffy” Smith, 88, of Dyersburg, died Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at West Tennessee Healthcare – Dyersburg Hospital. Born November 23, 1929, he was the son of the late Robert Benton and Lessie Mai (Sid) Lepper Smith. He was a former disc jockey during the 50’s and 60’s working at WDSG Radio Station where his “on air personality” was Snuffy Smith. Mr. Smith was a Master of Ceremonies at the Grand Old Opry where he was awarded D.J. of the Year in 1960. He was a former car salesman and worked at Dyersburg City Cab.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home officiated by Reverend Dennis Knowles with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Matthew Burns, Alan Cherry, Ben Cherry, Chuck Danehower, Derek Kissell, Rickey Vickery and Rick Kolwyck will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Smith.
The family will receive friends Friday, October 12th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
He is survived by two step-daughters, Lou Anderson Sullivan of Casa Grande, AZ, Fran Williams of Dyersburg; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two spouses, Gladys Smith and Ann Patterson Smith; and four siblings, Ida Martha Smith, Melba Rebecca Kolwyck, Bobbie Jean Cherry and Paul (Sonny) Edgar Smith.
The family requests memorials be directed to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.
