Bill Revell

Bill Revell, 90, of Dyersburg, died Monday, January 13, 2020 at Harborview Dyersburg.  Born January 5, 1930, he is the son of the late John and Violet Harness Revell. He was an active member of Gideons International, holding offices at the state and local level. He is a member of Dyersburg First United Methodist Church, a member of Sellers Sunday School Class and religious lay speaker state wide. Bill proudly served the City of Dyersburg as Mayor from 1980-2006.  He remained very active after his 26 year tenure as mayor by serving as I-69 Coalition Vice President.  In 1987, he earned the coveted Tennessee Municipal League “Mayor of the Year” Award and also served as past president.  Bill was the longest full-time mayor in the history of the State of Tennessee.  He is the past president of West Tennessee Mayors, former president of the West Tennessee Mayor’s and County Executives Association, Former Chairman of the Tennessee Local Governmental Planning Advisory Commission; a member of the Advisory board of the National League of Cities and was invited to be on the Advisory  Board of the Great Lakes Trade Corridor. Before assuming the position of Mayor, he was a businessman and a General Motors dealer for 26 years.  He graduated from the General Motors Institute and received his doctorate from Southern Bible Institute and Seminary in Augusta, GA. Mr. Revell served 8 years as chairman of the Tennessee Local Governmental Planning Advisory Commission and is past president of the Tennessee Municipal League and was a charter member of the Dyersburg Union Mission.  He was owner of Sunshine Motors.

Mr. Revell, a Dyersburg High School alumnus, returned to DHS football after completing graduation from college and has been on the sidelines since then supporting his hometown team. He was a star football and track athlete during his days at DHS and was honored in 2014 for his 61 years of dedicated service to the DHS football program. He has carried the down marker and chains during Dyersburg High School home football games since 1953.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2020 at Dyersburg First United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Dr. Mary Beth Bernheisel, Tim Roberson, Reverend Bill Phipps and Reverend Will Clark with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 16th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.                           .                                    

He is survived by his two daughters, Peggy Revell Davis, Janie Revell Helm (Sam), both of Dyersburg; four grandchildren, Tim Roberson (Michelle), February Roberson Wyse (Jason), Peggy Jane Helm, Scott Helm; seven   great-grandchildren, Gracie Roberson, Hannah Roberson, Timothy Revell (T.J.) Roberson, Kylee Wyse, Jason Torch Wyse, Scott Carter Revell Helm and Jack Auston Helm.     

Jason Wyse, Scott Helm, Sam Helm, Tim Roberson, Peggy Jane Helm, Terry Glover and Timothy Revell Roberson, Jr. will serve as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers will be Past and Present City of Dyersburg Aldermen, members of the Sellers Sunday School Class and Gideons International members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Sherrie Gail Revell.
